Buddha Boredom

Size

Ink-wash painting of a small seated Buddha on a misty hillside, pines beside him

A calm drawing game for Windows, macOS and Linux

Make something, and let it go.

Buddha Boredom comes from the Buddha Board, the little slate you paint on with plain water. A stroke shows up dark on the stone, holds for a breath, then dries back to nothing.

This page works the same way. Close this and draw anywhere, or press Draw for me and watch. With a pen, press harder for a broader line.

One dial

The fade is the setting that matters. Toward lingers, a line stays for about a minute; toward quick, it's gone soon after you lift the brush. In the full game you can also hold the fade still.

There's no score. Make a mark and watch it go.

Surfaces

Each one fades in its own way. Pick one to try it on the board.

  • Water on Stone The classic. Water darkens the stone and dries in from the edges.
  • Slow Ink Near-black ink on rice paper. The line thins where your hand hurries.
  • Watercolour Wash Every stroke picks up a new pigment that blooms into the paper and dries darker at its edges.
  • Glow Trails Neon light on a dark field, the look of the party games.
  • Chalk on Slate Dusty chalk on a green-black slate.
  • Charcoal on Paper Soft, grainy black on warm tan paper.

Tools

Mirror mandalas
Turn on Mirror and every stroke repeats around the centre 6, 8 or 12 times, so a few loose lines become a mandala.
Draw for me
When you'd rather watch, the board paints quiet pieces by itself, from an enso to a moon over water. Start drawing and it steps aside.

Also in the full game

Trace guides
Faint patterns to follow when you'd like a starting point, from an enso and a lotus to simple kanji like 山 and 川. There are two dozen in seven packs, and you can hide them any time.
Ambient sound
A soft soundscape generated as you play, with a quiet brush sound that rises and falls with your hand.

Two modes

At launch

Zen Mode

Just you and the board, for as long as you like.

  • Every surface on this page, and more in the game
  • Trace guides and the generated soundscape
  • Nothing to score or finish
  • Plays offline

After launch

Party Mode

The fade becomes the game, around one screen or online with friends.

  • Memory. A shape appears and fades. Everyone redraws it from memory, then all the attempts are shown together and you vote.
  • Telephone. Copy a fading ghost of the last drawing before it disappears, pass yours on, and see how far the end drifts from the start.
  • Co-op Zen. One shared canvas that everyone draws on at once, online, fading as you go.

Where it's at
